Little Grebe
FINALLY, on a lunchtime blipwander by the Water of Leith, I managed to get a semi-decent shot of one of the resident Little Grebes (Tachybaptus ruficollis)
This one seems to have got hold of a three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). He had about five in the five minutes that I was watching him, bringing each one to the surface and then beating it against the water and juggling it round into position to be swallowed.
A trip up to the National Museum of Scotland in the afternoon, to discuss the illustrations for a forthcoming paper...I wrote the report in about 2000, and it's only now getting prepared for publication...the wheels of archaeology grind slow, but they grind exceeding small :^/
