Flooding
What a tragic day for South East Queensland. The flooding has claimed a number of lives and many, many more are missing. Yesterdays rain and subsequent flooding caught whole towns by surprise, lifted the houses off of their stumps and carried them away, some with the residents trapping in them. Whole families have been reported missing. This is in a country that is well used to flash flooding.
I left work early today. The lower floor of our the company is prone to flooding so they have flood doors. When they are close there are workplace safety issues so it was looking like everyone was going to evacuate anyway.
The Ducati struggled on the way home. The traffic was crawling because a lot of people were trying to escape the low lying area in the city. That combined with the rain and my bikes engine sputtered most of the way home. At one stage I stalled and took me quite a while to get it started again.
Here at home we are safe and well Home is on higher ground away from creeks. That is more than I can say for a lot of people in lower lying areas around Brisbane. Tomorrow the rain is ecpected to ease but thetide will cause what is expected to be the worst inundation of low lying areas ever. And Thursdays tide will be still higher.
So there is worse to come.
You would think I would post a flood Blip wouldn't you? Well it isn't that easy. Authorities are asking people not to travel. I did take a drive down to the Brisbane river to watch the torrent. It didn't look all that impressive until I looked at yacht fly by taken along by the current.
This yacht is one of many heading into the safety of Manly Harbour. Safe because the harbour doesn't have a creek feeding into it and is therefore relatively flood safe. Many of the owners of yachts moored in Brisbane river are motoring out into the bay and then doubling back to Manly. The Harbour will be a bit squeezy tonight.
Just look at the colour of the sea!
