HUMBLE BEE
Attemps to import Humble bees ( commonly referred to as Bumble bees) to NZ from Britain began in 1873 and continued without success until 1885, when they were liberated and became established at Riccarton and the Port Hills
( Christchurch )
They rapidly spread and became established throughout both the South and North Islands within 10 years.
( So said Govt Entomologist, David Miller in his book " common insects of NZ)
What I know is there are a heap of them around at the moment giving the Butterflies Hell!@! They do have a nasty sting but they dont leave the sting behind!
There are 4 varieties NZ now and I think this one is 'Bombus ruderatus'
