'Hairbird'

A Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina) pufted up in the cold and awaited her turn at my feeder.
The Chipping Sparrow is common in every garden in America. Interestingly, its nickname is the "Hairbird', named for the habit of lining their nests with hair. They used to use horse hair when horses were more commonly utilized, but now, any hair will do. They have been noticed plucking the strands from the coat of sleeping dogs! I often lay out the wads of soft downy hair after I brush my rabbit in the spring. It's so fun to watch them fight over the find!
