La Croix-Rousse
This is one of the two hills in Lyon.
"Les Canuts" used to live and work in the apartments on this hillside in the 19th century. That was the name given to workers of the silk trade. They used very large mechanical weaving looms, hence the apartments with tall windows and high ceilings. Their life was very hard and they fought many times for their rights in violent rebellions. Their trade disappeared when artificial silk was invented at the beginning of the 20th century.
(So much sun today! I only enjoyed it for half an hour during my lunch break, but took many pictures ; it was hard to choose only one as a blip!)
