How can nature do this?

I cannot comprehend why these trees grow so ugly? And then when I looked closer at the flag pole on the left it appears to be born from one of these trees.....
Norfolk Pines need a fan club of people who love them because I just don't get these trees! ............sorry Norfolk Pine!!
