Leftover cakes
These cakes used to be made with leftovers of Christmas sweets. At the time when nothing could be thrown away in the kitchen, our mothers and grandmothers used the sweets left after the Christmas season and made cakes with them. The custom was to eat them before 'Lent' started, which is why they are still called 'Carnival cakes', bearing in mind that Carnival always precedes 'Lent'
The fact is that today nobody makes Christmas sweets at home, and nobody makes these cakes either.
Now you can get them at the bakery well before the time when they were supposed to be eaten!
In fact I took this pic just this morning!!!
