Derelict rolling stock

Another brilliantly sunny day, not a cloud in the sky all day long. After lunch we went on one of our favourite walks along the River Nene from Castor to Wansford station. On the return the footpath runs alongside the Nene VAlley Railway (NVR).

The NVR is a standard gauge railway, which runs for seven and a half miles between Yarwell Junction and Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. Its headquarters are based at Wansford beside the A1. The first railway to arrive in Peterborough came from Blisworth, via Northampton, Thrapston, Oundle and Wansford with the very first passenger train along the Nene Valley departing Peterborough at 7 o'clock on Monday 2 June 1845. The Nene Valley railway of today is the eastern section of this line.

Wansford Station now has a large collection of restored British and Continental engines and carriages, and both steam and diesel trains regularly run along the line to Peterborough. However, there's also a set of derelict rolling stock on a siding just outside the station, including this particular coach, which I find far more appealing than the buffed-up shiny engines.

I've photographed it before in the past, but never been very pleased with the results. Today, at last, I've managed to produce an image which conveys something of the colours and textures of this small piece of decaying railway memorabilia.
