Abandoned building 8: the folly

Cold and frosty morning but now the sun is shining forth and it feels positively springlike. Last in the series for the moment but it's one of those things that can be added to more or less continually, there are so many old buildings around.

This is Lord Bandon's folly built around the mid 1800s - a brilliant idea to keep the starving poor usefully employed during the Famine. I've never really understood the Conservative idea that you can't just help people, it's not good for  them, but you have to make them work /earn it somehow. Rather than just dole out food to these starving people they had to work for it by building, amongst other things, this folly. The irony was that the calories burned up making this edifice were far more than the soup provided. A coast road was also built at the time, which is rather more useful.
The folly is in a magnificent position looking out across the bay. When we first arrived eight years ago, it was for sale for a million pounds! I don't think here were any takers and it would need a lot of work for it is literally a shell.

Back to work tomorrow. I know everybody else has been back at least a week, but what with the snow , I have had three weeks off - it's going to be hell getting up in the dark :(
