New Year's Eve on Discovery Green
Friday
This morning Roger, Jen, Laura and I went to the Fine Arts Museum. We took a docent-led tour of some of the highlights of the collection, which was very good. Seeing as it was New Year's Eve, he chose as his theme Celebrations, and so picked out works that illustrated or were connected to a celebration of some sort. Then Jen wanted to see a small photography exhibit on the aftermath of Katrina, which was rather depressing. On the way back to the car, we went for a stroll in the Sculpture garden. Back at the apartment, Jason had prepared us lunch again. In the afternoon, Roger and I returned to the museum to see some of the European art, while Jen stayed behind and baked us a Tarte tatin for the evening. Tarte tatin is a French style upside-down apple tart in which the apples are caramelized in butter and sugar before the tart is baked. In the evening we enjoyed some of the festivities on Discovery Green and enjoyed an Indian style pizza at Bombay Pizza, which was excellent, before returning to the apartment, where we played board games until midnight, when we toasted in the New Year with champagne.
The building in the background is the Convention Center, which they were using as a backdrop for a sound and light show.
