Pohutukawa flowers

Sometimes referred to as the New Zealand Christmas Tree.
Lovely blooms of bright red in summer. I was always told that if the pohutukawas are in flower before Christmas we are in for a long hot/dry summer. I am not sure if that holds for the newer varieties around today. Anyway they are pretty and stunning as large old trees in flower along beachfronts in the North Island.
