Kew Dragon
Taken during our traditional New Year's walk around Kew Gardens. A tradition stretching all the way back to 2008, that is.
In front of the Palm house are 12 statues of heraldic beasts, of which this is one. Each has a brief description. This is the text next to the dragon:
The Red Dragon Of Wales.
The red dragon was used as a badge by Owen Tudor. His grandson, Henry VII,took it as a token of his supposed descent from Cadwalader, the last of the line of Maelgwyn, King of Wales. The beast holds a shield bearing a leopard in each quarter; this was the coat of arms of Llewelyn ap Griffith, the last native Prince of Wales.
