Friesland

The cold weather in northern Germany makes for stunning landscapes. Drove up through the Netherlands on ice-free roads and the second we crossed the German border, suddenly there was only one lane open. Snowy, stubble pitted fields went by outside the window, and the sky was filled with v formations of water birds, sometimes of countless proportions. Here's the frozen canal outside our lodgings. We arrived and had a pleasant evening in the company of Otto, Ci Kahn & Local bluegrass band The Looping Brothers. Otto had translated one of my songs into Plad Deutsch, a dialect spoken in Northern Germany. By candlelight, his voice rang hypnotic and sleepy in the small hours, before we picked back to our little house through the treacherous ice.
