Flowers In Your Hair

Holy.

Visited my grandparents tonight in Montague.
This is the church right across the street from their house.

I took a lot of shots today that are probably better, technically speaking, but I just like the story behind this one.

This may not be interesting to anyone other than myself. I just find history intriguing, especially when I have a personal connection (however distant it may be), and when the storyteller is my grandfather.
In the early 1800s, Reverend William Montague Ferry, Sr. founded many communities including Montague, Grand Haven, and Ferrysburg.
One of his sons was named Noah, and he became a major in the Civil War. He was captain of a company of 102 local men known as the "White River Guard". As he was leading his troops into the Battle of Gettysburg against Robert E. Lee, he was killed.
His brother, Edward, had this church constructed in his honor. It is the oldest church in Montague. Also in honor of heroes of the Civil War, the streets surrounding the church are named after other men who were killed in combat.

I practically grew up across the street from that church, yet I never knew its story before tonight.
Before I left, my grandpa handed me a stack of books dedicated to the history of Montague, some dating back to the 1800s.
I thanked him and told him I'd return them in a week.
He gave me a strange look and said,
"You're one of those weird teenagers who spends your Christmas Break reading books... aren't you?"

(He is a wise old man.)
