The Three Winds of Hina

This print by well known Hawaiian print artist Dietrich Varez is based on an old Hawaiian chant, Pu'inokilu a Hina.
In the chant, Hina, a Hawaiian goddess identified with the moon, is shown here warning the people of Moloka'i to mend their ways lest she let loose destructive winds from her wind gourd Wawahonua'aho.
Implicit in this ancient warning is the understanding that the way human beings think and behave affects the world around us, even the weather.
