Hello Bert

This is Bert.

Carved in 1999 out of an very old white oak tree, known as the Liberty tree, after it died. Rather than chop it down or have it fall on passing motorists it was sculpted into this 16ft tall wooden eagle with Liberty carved around the base.

He got his nickname Bert because those are the letters you see as you turn onto the road (though in this photo they are rather inconveniently covered by the wreath).

You would think it would make a good landmark for directions but I am often surprised that visitors do not notice it when they drive past.
