The Pensioner

Out of Time

One of the things I like about Edinburgh: that history all around you as you tread along. In the stones; you can almost smell it in the air. Out on George IV Bridge, the well heeled diners are making their way to the Outsider and Ondine, people at the end of the working week are thronging into the Bow and Sandy Bell's. Others make their way to Bristo for an orchestral recital while the students noisily shout up and down the thoroughfares. And here, just a stone's throw away, still and gaunt, the old Charity Workhouse built around 1740 in Forrest Hill. So good to stand awhile and reflect and take in the cold air before continuing on your way.
