Firefighter

This bronze sculpture by Kenny Hunter in the centre of Glasgow is a tribute to all firefighters past and present who have served in Strathclyde Fire & Rescue.

Glasgow gained the nickname Tinderbox City because of the number of buildings that went up in smoke, often accompanied by loss of life, particularly in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.

The most notorious of the fires was the Cheapside disaster in 1960 which saw a whisky warehouse explode, showering the area with masonry. Fourteen firemen and five members of the Glasgow Salvage Corps were killed, making it the worst peace time loss of life for the British Fire Service.

The Statue has been there since June 2001 and that year became a focal point for people of Glasgow to lay tributes to those who suffered in the events of 9/11.
