All standing in a row

Today we splashed out and hired a little 4x4 to explore the North of the island where some of the most impressive sites are. First stop was a golden sandy beach, with Moai including top knots, turquoise water perfect for swimming and palm trees - paradise! After a swim we headed round the bay a bit to a quieter beach for a picnic and to ecplore a little cave half way up the cliff. Then onto Tongariki, pictured here, which was just WOW! If you can imagine that behind these there was a beautiful blue sea with huge waves crashing and in front a big mountain you get the complete picture. Then on to the quarry where all the Moai on the island began life. They basically just hacked them out of the hillside and you could see hundreds of Moai in all stages of production. The slopes of the quarry were covered in Moai heads and there were abandoned ones on the way in and out of the area where they must have been damaged in transit. Got back to the hostel at 9pm and couldnñt be bothered to go out for dinner so M headed up to a little cafe round the corner and brought back a big Empanada stuffed with fresh tuna and melted cheese and some beers. It was the third one of these we had in our 4 day stay on Easter Island!
