Contractors in Hawick today creating a huge pile of dirty snow in a green space adjacent to the town's main car park.

SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) guidelines state that snow contaminated with large quantities of salt cannot be piled into water courses or rivers. In the case of the Tweed here, it would mean overly salty salmon - and we can't have that for our rich visitors, can we?

When it melts and (presumably) leaves huge deposits of salt, will we see packs of dogs and herds of deer frantically licking the grass?
