Saturdays With Joe
This was the preparation that my son Joe (19 year old boy with Down Syndrome) made last night for his adventure with his Dad today. They often plan a big road trip and look forward to it all week. Joe loves maps and doesn't forget anything that you promise him. He's been to Antelope Island before and for some reason that we wish we knew this is where he has wanted to go for the last little while. He's autistic, too - but there is definitely thought behind the process. He has lots of stuffed animals and picks different ones to go on each trip. These were the lucky ones today.
Here's some info from Wikipedia about Antelope Island;
It's an area of 42 square miles and is the largest island located within the Great Sale Lake, Utah, United States. The island becomes a peninsula when the lake is at extremely low levels.
Population of pronghorn antelope, porcupine, badger, coyote, bobcat, bighorn sheep, 600 American bison, and millions of waterfowl. The bison were introduced to the island in 1893, and have proven to be a valuable genetic pool for bison breeding and conservation purposes.
It is a State Park established in 1981. The island is accessible via a 7 mile causeway. The maximum elevation of 6,595 feet is about 2,500 feet above the level of the lake.
The Fielding Garr Ranch is located on the east side of the island. Here you can see the oldest (Anglo) building in Utah that is on its original foundation.
So, what did I do with the day to myself? Sanded down a few doors and replaced door knobs that have been sticking for 27 years that we've just ignored. Washed a ladder, practiced piano, and took a nice bath. When my husband got home he asked what I'd been doing and he said, "sheesh, your husband must be a loser" or something to that effect. He's not. But very funny what we choose to ignore and then the day comes and - it's time.
