Spinning around (slowly)
Positive temperatures had been forecast and, when I left the house, there was a steady drip, drip of water from the icicles that have formed on the gutters of the houses. The Scotrail website had provided some reassurance in the form of a reduced service which was, at 6.30am, showing the 7.09 train as 'on time'. So, you'd think I would have taken the hint when I got to the station to find the 7.09 now cancelled and the next train at 7.42am.
No, the man on the platform said that there was a train coming in that would go round the Fife circle and get to Edinburgh before the 7.42. And it would be warm and I could snooze or read more about Nick Cave's obsession with Avril Lavigne and Kylie Minogue's vaginas. So I got on. Big mistake. Four hours later the train pulled back into Inverkeithing having completed its circumnavigation of central Fife and I got off and went home to work. What I should have done in the first place, resisting the (wholly self-made) pressure to go into the office for the first time in two weeks. It wasn't dreadful - I had a seat and a book - just a complete waste of the morning.
The kids have been playing upstairs, trashing their bedroom and fighting over whichever toy the other has. Angels.
