Jacky's Journey

One of My Favourite Statues

This is one of my favourite statues in Edinburgh - to the Royal Scots Grey's regiment of horse.
The horses, needless to say, were all greys, and the uniforms all red, so the regiment was an incredibly dramatic and handsome one. They were involved in the Napoleonic Wars and were imortalised in a famous painting of them charging, swords drawn and horses looking very fierce indeed. Apparently one of my ancestors on my Dad's side was in the Scots Greys, but I have no idea when, so can't claim to know whether he saw action or not.
I'm a great lover of horses. I adore them; the smell of them; the gentleness of them; their power and their fragility all rolled into one willing and biddable creature. I'm incredibly uncomfortable about the way we used horses in war - and still abuse them across the world.
So here's to horses. The statue might be about the soldiers. But to me it's all about the horses.
