Walking on thin ice.
Looking down at this view I was reminded of the recklessness of youth, I would be too scared to take the risk. The pond is not particularly deep but deep enough. There were also hundreds of sledge marks down the slope and straight across the pond to the other side proving how many others had enjoyed the novelty of a freeze over.
Before the pond was officially `created' with the central island, the area was used as a skate/curling rink in the harsh winters of olden times. Are we too soft these days with our central heating? Then it was just a frozen dip in the natural landscape which filled up with rain water and conveniently froze in the winter.
