i've always thought that if you want to go to rio for a short weekend or a sightseeing tour, you'll be dissapointed and think it's overrated.
but if you have the chance to stay longer, be around a local, or genuinely just enjoy another culture-rio is wondeful. for me, the transition from overrated to 'i love it' came after a couple work trips. i spent time with locals. got to see the real rio in mangueira, madureira and norte. ate carioca food. saw a favela. paid attention to the ridiculous landscape. went to samba school. ran the logoa. and, like every one else who lives in rio, remembered that aside from family and friends, nothing else is really that important
