The Next Star Is Mine

Trees at dusk

The lane seemed unending, its sides banked high with snow, blocking out all but the faintest glow of the nearby city. A solitary vehicle, its headlights straining outwards against the darkness, crept slowly down the road. There had been clarity and colour earlier, but now twilight gathered and clouds pushed in on a bitter north wind. The car passed by and further on turned a corner in the road, its lights fizzling out. The trees stood alone in a field of snow, silently shivering, remembering only dimly their long lost summer coats.
