Stilty

Near where I am presently staying (at my mum and dad's, actually) there is a very close mangrove swamp. A boardwalk has been built through it so curious humans can gawp at the wondrous sights.

One of the most dominant of the tidal mangrove species is the Stilt-rooted Mangrove (Rhizophora stylosa). These strange creatures seem to be supported by their roots but, rather, the fruit of these trees develops downwards and becomes roots. Quite odd but strangely compelling.

[I feel I should add that this is not a photograph of the swamp! It is a little further on but the trees were easier to capture because of the light. Also, the boardwalk was named after Bryan and Erica Costigan who did a lot to encourage and preserve the important swampy area.]
