Organ recital

Sunday
We had a full morning at church this morning. We weren't there much longer than usual, but whereas usually we sing 1st service, get to take a break during 2nd and sing again in the 3rd service, leaving after the anthem, today we were singing in all three services, and had been asked to stay through the end of the third service. The significance of today was that it was Commitment Sunday, the culmination of the Capital Campaign, where they were receiving pledges to the Capital Campaign as well as stewardship pledges. The three services run in immediate succession, so there's barely even time for a toilet break! It gave us a small taste of what our three pastors experience every week! We were rewarded following the third service, as there was a very nice reception open to the whole church to celebrate the occasion. This afternoon, Roger was out working in the yard again, while I did a bit of work around the house before going out for a brisk walk around the neighborhood. Then later in the afternoon we went to Hyde Park United Methodist Church for an organ recital. The organist was their fairly recently appointed resident organist, Brenda Portman. She is gaining quite a name for herself, as in recent years she has won three organ competitions, including the Bank District British/American Organ Competition in London, England in 2009. She performed a wonderfully varied program. Organ players simply amaze me, as they're doing such complicated things with their feet as well as four keyboards and numerous stops. Their organ, shown in my blip, was built by the Casavant Company of Quebec, Canada. It was specifically designed to maximize the acoustics of the church (which is classical English in style) and was completed in 1990.
