Old Town Kashgar

The old town area in Kashgar had been pretty much unchanged for hundreds of years - and the old mud buildings (and the Uighur communities in them) have stood the test of time. Until now.

The incoming Han chinese authorities are breaking up the old town communities and rehousing them elsewhere in the city. The old town buildings are being bulldozed since they are deemed to be 'earthquake hazards'.

One area of the city had been bulldozed in the two weeks before we were there. I've no idea if these streets still exist, or where these children are living now. (Image posted November 2010)
