End of the Line

Walked along the shore of Llyn Tegid, Bala Lake, following the old Llangollen to Barmouth line. This section, between Bala Lake Halt and Llanuwchllyn, now forms the Bala Lake Railway, a narrow gauge railway.

As we walked we wondered why the track bed was so wide for a narrow gauge and the sleepers had "spare" bolt holes drilled in them. Once home a little bit of research revealed that the line was originally built as standard gauge. In the photo you can see that the track bed is quite high in the station. It must have again been raised to accommodate the narrow gauge engines and carriages.

None of the buildings were open but all had been beautifully restored and very well maintained.
