The Nebbit Stane

This pyramidal granite boulder - its name comes from the Scots word 'neb', meaning 'nose' or 'beak' - sits in the River Don just opposite Paradise Wood, readily visible from the section of the Lord's Throat Road that runs directly alongside the river at this point.

The Nebbit Stane acts as a natural flowmeter on the Don: two or three times a year, after heavy rain or melting snow in its mountain catchment basin, the river current flows right over the top of the stone.

Today, curiously, despite recent rains, the river was actually at the lowest level I have seen it for a quite some while.
