Morning walk

A very cold morning - we had to scrape a thick layer of frost from the windscreen before taking Chris to the station, to catch his train back to Sheffield. It was great to have him home for the weekend, but I hate saying goodbye again - it never seems to get easier.

After we'd deposited him, we took the dogs to Ferry Meadows for a long walk in the morning sun. The image above shows Pete walking across the pontoon bridge, which was silhouetted against the sky and water. There are three lakes at Ferry Meadows and the pontoon bridge crosses a relatively narrow channel between the two largest lakes, which take floodwater from the River Nene. Because it is floating, the bridge is able to respond to the changing water levels and is always passable.

This afternoon I led our regular science session. This week we were studying respiration and gas exchange. We carried out an experiment to find the effect of exercise on heart rate, rate of breathing and size of breath taken. This involved much running up and down stairs, and a great deal of water all over the kitchen! But it was worth it, as two of the boys said it was one of the best sessions we've ever had!

For those who were following Bill's progress,I'm afraid I have sad news. He died during the night, although we still have no idea what was the matter with him.
