that headless body, could be you!

example: advert for a private college, "cdi college"
source: the vancouver courier; wednesday, october 6, 2010, page ew34

analysis:
this is a new one. instead of using the coloured shapes of silhouettes, devoid of distinguishing features, to generalize the target audience, the photographs of people dressed up as a businessman, a healthcare professional, and an i.t. specialist are generalized and unspecified by the lack of faces: they been completely erased from the picture in an image editing software.

it is quite creepy...it looks as though the invisible man was modeling these outfits. i am sure the viewers do manage to make the connection that they're suppose to imagine themselves donning those career-appropriate outfits, but it is rather distracting, since we are used to seeing heads attached to those well-outfitted bodies.

in fact, i think the faceless visual hurts the message: it becomes quite impersonal and detached. and it probably would have been better to reveal the faces of the actual models. then at least, there would have been human faces to connect with and eye gazes to draw the viewers into the advert and thus, the main message.
