father

it's veteran's day here in america.

i always had a very difficult relationship with my father. unfortunately there was very little love and respect between us, however, when i was talking with a friend today about his grandfather's service to his country, i googled my father and found a pretty exhaustive article about his service in the US army, his commendations and his work with his community. i sat with tears in my eyes as i was learning things about my father i never knew.

i am profoundly sad today to realize how many years we lost and can never get back because we failed to reach out to each other and attempt to understand what made/makes each of us tick.

my father died on his birthday in 2001. i was by his side.
