Compost Mentis

Ovum in ovo!

My plan to observe a respectful 2 minute silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month was derailed by a strangled yelp when I found an egg within another egg. Armistice Day being a public holiday here, I decided to make pancakes for brunch. Just as Radio 4 was beginning its traditional silence, I cracked open an egg to find a smaller one inside it. It was perectly formed, shell and all. For a moment I thought it was something else, although I'm not entirely sure what - an alien perhaps - so I lost my composure and shreiked, "Oh my god," loud enough to bring everyone including the dog rushing to the kitchen to see what had happened to me.

A regular sized egg from the egg farm where these free range eggs come from weighs 75 grams on average. The little egg weighed 14 grams. We've had many double-yolkers over the years, but I've never seen anything like this.

Sadly, I won't make it to the Guinness Book of World Records because the ovum in ovo phenomenon has been recorded before. Not sure what to do with the little egg now. The prospect of eau de rotten egg perfuming the house in a few days' time offsets the temptation to hang on to the little egg as a memento.

Suggestions on a postcard please.

Postscript, Saturday, 13 November, 9:31 a.m.

I've just woken up to discover I got Blip of the Week and my head is still spinning.

Thank you everyone for all your lovely comments and hearts and stars. And thank you to the wonderful folk at Blip Central for giving me this honour. It was so unexpected and I'm still in shock. On a good day I get maybe a dozen comments on my journal, so waking up to find 80+ comments and over 1000 views on this blip gave me quite a jolt. Don't worry, none of this is going to my head, but I will enjoy wearing my little gold crown for the next 6 days : )

Good grief. Coffee!
