As the sun sets on Victoria BC, it's simultaneously rising in Calcutta, India. Sleepy men squat on their thin haunches and brush their teeth with the broken end of a stick before lighting up a bidi. A few smoky fires have been lit for breakfast. Some women are already carrying water on their heads. Others roll over in their beds as the announcer on All-India Radio interrupts the theme from a new Bollywood movie to give the weather, another warm one, already 23 degrees, with the clouds clearing, but still bad news from Andhra Pradesh where tropical storm Jal has already killed 11 people. Part of the current warming trend is attributable to the storm, but the weekend is expected to be cooler, according to a scientisit at Noida's National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting.
