Pony Ridge
A muddy walk through the New* Forest** today, mostly to scrunch through the newly fallen leaves.
Loads of photo opportunities - pigs left out on pannage***, beautiful Autumn colours, but this one captured a moment best - two New Forest ponies walking along a ridge to join the rest of their group.
* Not "New" of course - there has been forest here for thousands of years
** Not really "Forest", either - a surprisingly high proportion is heathland
*** All the pigs in the Forest are owned by Commoners. Each year they are allowed onto open forest land for 60 days, known as pannage season, to eat acorns which would otherwise poison the ponies.
