Photographing the photographer
A special occasion for the Geographical Association today as we celebrate the purchase of our building and our committment to stay in the city of Sheffield. The society is now over 100 years old, so it's taken an awfully long time to put down some permanent roots.
An interesting snippet from the archives:
The Geographical Association was formed by five geographers in 1893 and remains an independent association. The first members got together to use and exchange lantern slides, a leading technology of the day. Today, the GA's purpose is the same - sharing ideas and learning from each other, using the best available technology.
The event far exceeded my expectations - the young people from high schools in Sheffield spoke with great articulacy about their experience and love of geography and the two Sheffield members of parliament (David Blunkett and Megg Munn) spoke eloquently of their passion for education, the importance of geography to them personally and of their experience of visits overseas.
I had the wrong camera with me for taking photographs in the available light but I thought I might photograph Bryan in action as he took one of the more formal portraits of the event. Bryan's a great photographer and a good friend of the GA - you can see some of his photographs on his Flickr website.
