no wonder it's a bit dim it's a heck of a long way away.

Learned that the altitude of Polaris equals the latitude of the observer.
A bit of geometry on the other side of this fingerpost made it obvious.

Polaris can't be seen from the southern hemisphere.

On the equator you can just see it and at the same time see the southern cross - but that's another story.......
