Belfast City Hall
Bit of a lazy blip today as the City Hall is close to where I work.
Not the most cheery of images but it is an impressive building.
Belfast was granted city status by Queen Victoria in 1888 and Belfast City Hall was built in celebration of this and also because the expanding city needed a larger civic building. The foundation stone was laid in 1898 and the City Hall was opened in 1906, three years before Belfast began to build the Titanic. At this time Belfast was a major industrial city with a thriving shipbuilding industry.
A random and I think interesting fact is that the City Hall in Durban, South Africa was modelled on Belfast City Hall. If you google it, you'll see the likeness.
I will be blipping Belfast City Hall again in a few weeks when the annual Continental Market takes up residence in its grounds and our Christmas lights have been switched on!
