Pestle Puffball (Handkea excipuliformis)

This is an old specimen hence the brown colouring. The base of the fungus is sterile, all the spores are contained in the 'ball' at the top. Eventually the top will split (it's just starting to do so) and millions of spores will be scattered on the wind.
