freelensing

Today, I spent ages getting to grips with freelensing, then promptly lost most of the decent pics with over zealous deletions. What a banana I am.

So here is the only freelens shot that was in focus and it's the flippin' cat again. It doesn't even have the right look but never mind.

If anyone is a freelensing expert please can I have some tips - I'm using my canon in manual mode, I've realised that the 50mm lens doesn't work (I assume because it lets in so much light) so I've been using the kit lens, how do you get good results? I realise this is a very wide question, but all help is appreciated!
