The Bardolater

Good company, good wine, good welcome

"Good company, good wine, good welcome / Can make good people."
King Henry VIII I.iv

Other examples of the Bard's particular affection for wine abound throughout his plays - including Antony and Cleopatra, Othello and Coriolanus.

That tidbit of Bardolatry aside, I bought these three wineglasses in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, in the summer of 2005. Rothenburg is a darling little walled town less than a hour south of Wurzburg, and boasts a history stretching back through the medieval period as well as a connection to several Hollywood films. Interested tourists can walk its walls, peruse its Christmas shops or tour the quite delectable Kriminalmuseum - a museum stuffed with sundry torture and disciplinary devices.

My father was stationed in Wurzburg in the early 1970s, and while there acquired a set of Bockling wineglasses, which I admired throughout my childhood. Consequently, when my family visited Bavaria in 2005 and I came across a wine shop prominently displaying Bockling glasses that closely resembled my parents', nothing would suffice but that I had to buy some for my own use.

Don't ask me why I chose to buy not two, not four ... but three wineglasses. The rationale behind that decision has long since been forgotten.
