Death of a thousand cuts
We've lost THE BLADUD'S ARMS; are we now to lose THE BLADUD'S HEAD? There are rumours circulating in the local community that it is or has been sold and may well go the way of Bladud's other appendages...
When I first moved to Lambridge ten years ago, Larkhall was well served with good local community public houses. Admittedly, THE BLADUD'S ARMS had already closed and was being converted into a private home, with the loss of its iconic round window. But there were still FILOs (First In, Last Out), THE BRAINS SURGERY, THE ROSE AND CROWN as well as THE LARKHALL INN.
FILOs was converted in the last 12 months into a Gastropub, ONE BEAUFORT, which in many ways is an improvement. Certainly, the cuisine is excellent and distinctive. THE BRAINS SURGERY has been closed this last twelve month or so, forcing expats of the Welsh Diaspora to resort to bottled Brains S.A. to meet their cravings for the tastes of home. And the ROSE AND CROWN has recently closed 'for two weeks', which by some wierd relativistic time dilation has stretched well beyond a fortnight.
Only the LHI is bustling; I certainly hope it will be when I go there tonight!
