Tough Guys

As we were heading back to Bellaland tonight, we took the opportunity to stop off at the Commando Memorial by Spean Bridge, and very imposing it is too.

The bronze statue is of three young men in field dress looking out to Ben Nevis, the area where most of their training took place during World War 2.

Imagine what it must have been like for these young lads, mostly from the industrial cities, who joined up and found themselves in the middle of Highlands.

It was a time when there were only single track roads, no electricity, no street lights, no shops and very few bus or train services. It must have been like going to another country and in many ways it was - they even spoke a different language and after all that you had to go and train in the mountains - tough guys.
