November Lights in October

It's a rainy day, so we decided to stay indoors. This beautiful plant, November Lights/Swedish Ivy/Silverleaf Spurflower, Plectranthus oertendahlii, was the perfect emergency blip. It flowers every year in October-November.

The plant was first described by Thore Christian Elias Fries who was Professor of Botany in Lund, based on cultivated material in the greenhouse of the Botany Institute in Uppsala. It was named after the gardener Ivar Anders Oertendahl. The origin of the plant was a mystery and it was not found in the wild until 1936. It grows in a small area in South Africa from Oribi Gorge to Uvongo - the habitat is wooded river valleys near the coast.
