Success Story
You're probably wondering how a photo of dead fish in a creek represents a success. The answer is that these aren't just dead fish -- they're salmon, and they died after spawning, as all salmon do. But there's more. In the summer of 2009, this section of MacAulay Creek was moved from a roadside ditch along the busy Mount Baker Highway, into this new channel through an adjacent alder grove. Adult coho salmon were seen in the creek just a few months later. Now it's a healthy productive stream.
This project was funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Pioneers in Conservation Program and by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife It's one of the many projects conceived and implemented by NSEA (Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association) during the last 20 years. It would not have been possible without the generous cooperation of the Heath family, owner of the property through which the creek now flows.
