In the box
A half dozen selection from the type box. The whole box is a mixture of the personal and the practical, after all it has to be small enough to fit in the available space. There are stories behind all the objects - some simple, some complex. In this subset there is a winners medal from the S&N mixed hockey tournament in 1991. Maybe it was bad form, but we won our own competition after a penalty shoot-out that went to sudden-death. A stopper from a bottle of malt whisky - nothing special, just a pleasing little object. Next a Blood Bowl figure painted up by M many years ago as part of a Dundee United styled set. On the bottom row a couple of coins - an old penny as old as me and a newish 50p with an interesting design. Again nothing special, but finding it in change one day I liked it and so it made it into the box. Finally a badge for the Durham YOC (Young Ornithologists Club) that I helped as a young leader during my time at Durham Uni in the early 1980s. I really enjoyed the trips we went on, especially when I helped to lead a summer holiday trip the group made to Speyside, where I was working one summer. It was good to do something in Durham that wasn't connected to the University - helping to broaden my horizons and escape the sometime claustrophobic atmosphere of college and academic department.
