This is exactly the same sort of button jar we had as kids - in fact it could be that actual button jar...

Where I got all the buttons from I do not know - not being a habitual button buyer or anything. What I do know is that I can never find the one that I need and so all the black trousers in the house that have ever needed a new button now sport navy ones.

We had it out because my 12 year old needed buttons to decorate the fleece hat she is making her little sister in textile designs. Did she find what she needed amongst the hundreds, of course not, button shop here we come tomorrow!
