Hedgeapples

I was driving home and saw a pile of these on the ground. I stopped and picked up these two and brought them home. I said aren't these the biggest walnuts you ever saw? My neighbor laughed and said they are called hedgeapples, and no one seems to know of anything they are good for. I still think they are cool looking.
